The Nigerian National Labor Union (NLC) has denied claims that it has withdrawn from the nationwide protest planned for August 1, describing the reports as "false."
In a statement it released on its social media page X, the NLC clarified that it cannot withdraw from the unplanned protests.
"Only the organizers of the national protest can decide to withdraw or continue the protest," said the NLC.
The statement stated that "the Nigerian Union of Labor has special methods of judging the management of its industrial activities, such as protests before such activities are carried out."
The NLC also expressed its support for the planned protests, recognizing the economic hardship Nigerians are facing due to government policies.
"The fact that the NLC did not organize the protest does not mean that the group has forgotten the hardships Nigerians are facing as a result of the government's bad economic policies," said the NLC.
The NLC has requested President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to engage in dialogue with the leaders of the protest to meet their demands and advise against the use of force in response to public discontent.
